1963 - Blue Velvet (Bobby Vinton)

Blue Velvet

"Blue Velvet" is a popular song, written by Bernie Wayne and Lee Morris, that has been recorded by several artists. It was first a hit for Tony Bennett in 1951, when it peaked at #16 on the Billboard Best Selling Pop Singles Chart.

Bobby Vinton's version of the song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September '63, and held the top spot for 3 weeks. It also spent 8 weeks atop the U.S. adult contemporary chart.

Vinton's version of "Blue Velvet" failed to make the British charts when it was first released, but a re-released version in 1990 went to #2 in the United Kingdom.

Lyrics:

She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light
From the stars

She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May her tender sighs
Love was ours

Ours a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow
Like a flame burning brightly
But when she left, gone was the glow of

Blue velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
Precious and warm, a memory
Through the years

And I still can see blue velvet
Through my tears
